TOP GOLF to Open in Albuquerque Venue on Friday February 5th, 2021

After years of recruitment, a summer of debate over incentives and more than 23 months of construction, Topgolf will tee off in Albuquerque on Friday.

Topgolf announced Monday that by the end of the week, guests can visit and play at the three-level entertainment center at 1600 Desert Surf Cir NE. Topgolf has 72 outdoor hitting bays that will require reservations and be limited to six people per bay with Covid-19 social distancing guidelines in place. Rates for each hitting bay range from $25 to $45 an hour depending upon what time a guest would reserve the bay.

The indoor common areas will also be off-limits because of the Covid-19 protocols.

In addition to the hitting bays, Topgolf offers a food and drink menu that includes beer from Bosque Brewing Co., Marble, La Cumbre and more as well as a rooftop terrace with a fire pit and private event space.

“We are so pleased to welcome the community of Albuquerque into our newest venue to enjoy the Topgolf experience,” said Topgolf CEO Dolf Berle in a prepared statement. “A safe and enjoyable experience is our top priority, and our guests can be confident in the safety protocols we have in place so they can focus on simply having a great time while playing in our outdoor hitting bays.”

Topgolf could not be immediately reached for comment.

Topgolf's expansion into Albuquerque has been years in the works. Business First reported Lisa Allen-Urrea of Allen-Urrea Commercial Brokerage had been working on filling the 14.4 acres at the southwest corner of Montaño Road and Interstate 25 as early as 2013 when she struck up a conversation with Topgolf as a possible tenant. Three years later, Albuquerque had made Topgolf's short list before it announced it was actively pursuing an Albuquerque location in 2018.

Topgolf originally targeted a spring 2019 opening date before it broke ground in February 2019. At the time of its groundbreaking in Albuquerque, Topgolf hoped to be open by summer 2020.

The Chipotle craze is finally coming to Santa Fe.

Chipotle Mexican Grill will open its first Santa Fe burrito restaurant in the fall at the Crossroads Center at Cerrillos Road and St. Francis Drive.

Chipotle will be the flagship for a spiffed-up Crossroads Center.

The center’s parking lot will be resurfaced and restriped, and new lighting and landscaping will be installed, said Lisa Allen-Urrea, broker at Allen-Urrea Commercial Brokerage, who represents the owner of the largest share of the 1.8-acre Crossroads Center.

“[Crossroads Center] is needing the attention we are giving it,” Allen-Urrea said. “The potential has always been there. I think in the past it was comfortable where it was.”

Chipotle has scouted Santa Fe for a few years and has been in negotiations with the Crossroads Center for more than a year, Allen-Urrea said.

Chipotle will fill the building previously occupied by The Mattress Store that closed in October 2017. But the 3,600-square-foot structure will be expanded by 1,500 feet toward Cerrillos Road.

“Chipotle can be visible when all those cars per day are sitting at the busiest intersection in Santa Fe,” Allen-Urrea said.

Cerrillos and St. Francis is one of the busiest intersections in the city, but the New Mexico Department of Transportation does not track traffic at intersections, spokeswoman Rosanne Rodriguez said.

Chipotle will fill about 2,500 square feet, with another 2,570 square feet available for lease in the same building. Another 3,600 square feet next to Susan’s Fine Wine and Spirits also is available for lease.

“We are negotiating strongly on both of those,” Allen-Urrea said. “Two years out, Crossroads will have a great blend of local and national tenants.”

What will become the Chipotle building was fenced off at the start of March, with construction expected to begin this week.

Chipotle has eight stores in New Mexico but is a latecomer the Land of Enchantment. The first of five Albuquerque stores opened in 2011, a Clovis outlet opened in 2017, and Farmington and Las Cruces followed in January and February of 2018, respectively.

Chipotle was founded in Denver in 1993 and remained headquartered there until moving the corporate office to Newport Beach, Calif., last summer. The company first expanded beyond Colorado in 1998.

Chipotle survived an E.coli food-safety crisis in 2015 that sickened 55 people in 11 states, mostly in Oregon and Washington, and 43 restaurants were closed in those two states. Chipotle owns and operates all its restaurants, unlike the usual franchising model employed by large national restaurant chains.

Behind the deal: Topgolf’s drive to ABQ was six years in the works

Lisa Allen-Urrea found out about Topgolf when she was at a convention in Dallas in 2013 to see possible new tenants.

After touring a new Topgolf location, she thought the company would be an ideal fit for a site she was trying to fill.

From there, Allen-Urrea, who was the commercial broker on the southwest corner of Montaño Road and Interstate 25, struck up a conversation with Topgolf about possibly expanding to the site.

At the time, Topgolf had its sights set on expanding to larger markets. But after many phone calls, dozens of in-person meetings among Allen-Urrea's team and the Albuquerque City Council and Bernalillo County — and a summer of debate on incentives, the Dallas-based sports entertainment venue is finally making its move to the Duke City as it broke ground Wednesday.

Topgolf is set to open in Albuquerque in summer 2020, according to the company.  View the accompanying slideshow to see photos of Wednesday's groundbreaking.

"Our goal from the start was to enliven this corner with a development that enhanced the city of Albuquerque and bring a destination tenant," Allen-Urrea said. "By Topgolf locating here, they can serve the entire city — that's the way I envisioned it and that's the way the sellers envisioned it, and I think in the end, that's what Topgolf also saw."

Albuquerque Investors LLC is the developer behind the project. Drew Snyder of Albuquerque Investors said along with appearing at city and county commission meetings and spearheading the public-private partnership, his team's roles were land acquisition and getting the site ready for Topgolf to build on. CBRE helped facilitate site selection for Topgolf, officials said.

The Albuquerque Journal reported that Illinois-based ARCO/Murray will be the project's general contractor.

Snyder and Allen-Urrea credited the City Council and Bernalillo County for being proactive and working with Topgolf to complete the deal. City Councilor Diane Gibson, whose district is where Topgolf will be located, said she's had several meetings with Topgolf and found it a good deal for a site that sat vacant for years.

"This is a return on investment in public dollars that we don't see in Albuquerque very often," she said.

Topgolf was a hotly debated project over the summer between Mayor Tim Keller's administration and the Albuquerque City Council, particularly the incentives the Council ultimately ended up passing. A $2.6 million incentive package was vetoed by Keller before the City Council overrode his veto in a 7-2 vote in August.

Gibson said she appreciated the Keller administration's willingness to keep the project moving forward after the veto override.

"To start with just a thought in 2013 and then now we're putting a shovel in the ground — it's exhilarating, it's a part of the business that you don't get to do and enjoy every day," Allen-Urrea said. "To come from that idea and have it now become a reality and have a part in that — there's a huge team that made all this happen — but to have a part in that, it will always have a significant place in my life."
